MATCH PREVIEW | Reserves set for Headingley outing this Friday
With the top six confirmed after 11 rounds of intense Reserves action, Leeds Rhinos Reserves begin the second part of their season this Friday as Chev Walker's side take on Wigan Warriors at AMT Headingley, kick off 5.15pm.
In a curtain raiser to the first team's MND Awareness game against Hull KR, the Rhinos look to make a strong start to five tough clashes as teams fight for a place in the top four semi-final spots. Alongside Wigan, Leeds look ahead to further matches against Warrington, Wakefield, Castleford and Hull FC over July and August as the young Rhinos aim to qualify for the semi finals.
Despite losing out to Hull KR in the final game of the first part of the season, Leeds have been impressive as they recorded seven wins in 11 games - led by a six-game winning streak that saw them defeat Bradford, Huddersfield, London, Hull FC, Castleford and St Helens. Similar to last year's Reserves Grand Final winning side, head coach Walker has assembled a side made up of the best talent from across the Rhinos grades, led by ever-presents Joe Diskin, Riley Lumb, Oliver Smart, Harry Smith and Jacob Stead alongside rising Academy talents Kai Irvine, Wade White, Tom Richardson and Robin Smith who are amongst 10 Under-18s who have added more minutes outside the Academy competition by running out for the Reserves.
Clashes against the Warriors Reserves have always been entertaining at both AMT Headingley and at Robin Park Arena as two of Super League's leading clubs have showcased their best talent since the competition returned in 2022. The Warriors' three-game winning streak between 2022 and 2024 was reluctantly broken last year when two tries from Ethan Clark-Wood, Harley Thomas, Presley Cassell and Joe Diskin helped Leeds on their way to a dominant 60-26 final score away from home, but the rematch back in February this year ended in Wigan walking away with a 20-6 result.
The Warriors have set the standard across the Reserves competition with a perfect 100% winning record during the first 11 games.
Led by John Duffy, the side in Cherry and White have swept all before them dominantly starting with their victory over the Rhinos in round one. A 46-10 win over Bradford in round two was swiftly followed by a 32-0 final score against Huddersfield and a derby win over Saints as the side began to click into gear. Castleford, Warrington, Hull FC, Hull KR and Leigh were also defeated by the time June arrived, and with top spot all but confirmed, the Warriors put a combined 124 points past London and Wakefield in their final two games to set up a run for a third Grand Final title.
